Epilogue to Iran Ink

Copper, gold, mustard, gleaming, floating in the mirage of long hot days. An expanse of hot torrid land. Hills in the middle, range of mountains out on the horizon, subterranean waters resounding harmoniously. Thorn bushes amassed here, scattered there, scorpions in courtship, rattlesnakes playing in an orchestra; stranded birds dosing off under the shelter of an arid rock waiting to fly away. A cyclon curling up, a caravan of loaded beasts struggling solomnly across the endless path. An occasional emerald oasis, refreshing the tired eyes. At night the universe leaping forward, stars hanging upside down. The moon indulging in the heat of the day and the cool of the night. Dawn emerging with morning dews evaporating swiftly, the air heaving with the approach of the sunrise. A myth exists that God herself monitored the genesis of the deserts of south-east Persia. Otherwise, how could the sequel of beauty and the total serinity in that barren plain have come into existence with such precision and professionalism. (an opening to Chapter One of the historical novel, Pomegranate Hearts, Rouhi Shafii, Shiraz Press, United Kingdom, 2006).

And there stands in the middle of this desert, the ancient city of Kerman, where my mother's family came from and where I was born and lived until seven years of age. I will take you to kerman through my family photos which speak the history. I will take you to Jiroft, a small town then and a big city now, where my father came from and where I lived until the age of twelve; to the town of Bam, where my aunt moved with her huband and I was sent to live with her and finish high school. You will see photos of my family and you will read the story behinbd each photo.

My Picture Book will take you to Tehran, where I went to study at the university in the early 1960s and where the rest of my family migrated shortly afterwards. Tehran of the 1960-70 will come to life in my Picture Book. I will, at the end of this chapter of Iran Ink take you to the unfinished life which my family & I are living in our borrowed home, England.

I think it is vital that our children who don't remember much about their homeland and our grandchildren who have no idea of our past, thread around the tendril of history and stand firm on the roots which had existed in that farway land as far as time goes back.

The opening of 'Iran Ink' takes you, the reader behind the curtain of time and brings to life a portion of the lives of us ordinary people who were thrown out of our familiar orbit by an incident which was partly our own making.

I dedicate my "Picture Book" to those Iranian children who have lived through the distortion of history in recent years.
